MSHA Eligibility Guidelines Gets a Reboot
Blake Donovan, M.A., CCC-SLP The Michigan Speech-Language Guidelines: Suggestions for Eligibility, Service Delivery & Exit Criteria, Edited by Maureen Staskowski, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, ASHA Fellow, Macomb Public Schools, Published and Revised by MSHA in 2006, is getting a reboot from our Public Schools Committee. Are you interested in reviewing and providing input?
Thanks to the MSHA Executive Board for the encouragement and direction to update these Guidelines. It is time to revisit some sections of this important document that is used in public school districts around Michigan. Blake Donovan, M.A., CCC-SLP, Livingston County RESA, MSHA VP for Public Schools, and Alyssa Webster, M.A., CFY-SLP, Eaton County RESA, MSHA Advisory Assembly/Public Schools chairperson, have begun the process of review. Many thanks to Celeste Gerlach, M.A., CCC-SLP, Haslett Public Schools, for her extensive work updating the Articulation chapter. MSHA President-Elect Lisa Register, M.A., CCC-SLP, Lansing School District, will help to shepherd this document through its revision process.
For those of you who might not be familiar with this document, or its history, go to our website at www.michiganspeechhearing.org and follow this link: http://www.misd.net/SEconsult/files/MichiganSpeechLanguageGuidelinesRevised12-06.pdf
The original Guidelines was published by MSHA in 1992 by the members of the Public School Committee. Its preface states: Its intent is to serve as a resource to SLPs and administrators as local practices are established. It is hoped that this document facilitates discussion. It has been a valuable resource and we hope to update sections to help continue its use and relevance in the state of Michigan.
At the 2018 MSHA Annual Conference in Kalamazoo, the Public School Committee plans to host a session where the revisions can be read and reviewed and input is encouraged. Check the MSHA Program Schedule for the day, time and room.
We look forward to having our public school SLPs weigh in on the update of this important document as we make it more relevant and useful.

MSHA Membership Dues Renewal Cards in the Mail
Greg Spray, M.A., CCC-SLP The MSHA Membership Dues Renewal cards are in the mail! You should receive it soon, and we thank you for your continuing support of MSHA. If you pay prior to November 1, 2017, you can save $5! We have not raised our dues for 25 years! This is in acknowledgement and full appreciation of the financial burdens all SLPs have with licensure, reduced employer support of continuing education, and the general economic struggles in the public schools and healthcare institutions. (Pictured above Greg Spray and friends).
We need your support more now than ever. Your dues allow us to have an office with two employees, hire a lobbyist, produce an annual conference which allows you to earn CEUs and provide networking opportunities, and to provide the kind of support and representation you all deserve. We are the state association for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists.
Thank you for your important and continued support of MSHA!

Updated FAQs Regarding Your SLP License
Here are ANSWERS to some frequently asked questions (FAQs) that LARA has responded to! And a helpful link to their website: http://www.michigan.gov/documents/lara/Speech_Language_Pathology_FAQs_538247_7.pdf
Do I have to complete continuing education for renewal or relicensure?
Rule 338.627 adds the requirement of 20 continuous professional development credits (cpd) with at least 1 cpd credit in pain and symptom management in order to renew. This requirement began with the 2016 renewal cycle. MSHA will offer classes ever year at our annual conferences to meet the requirements for either the Human Trafficking requirement, and/or the Pain Management cpd requirement.
Rules 338.621 and 338.623 add the requirement of acquiring not less than 20 cpd with at least 1 cpd credit in pain and symptom management within 2 years immediately preceding the date of application for relicensure for a full or limited license. This will be required for a relicensure application submitted on or after 10/1/2019.
Rule 338.629 lays out the acceptable cpd activities, requirements, and limitations.
When do I have to meet the requirements for the completion of training in identifying victims of human trafficking?
Rule 338.604 requires licensees to complete training in identifying victims of human trafficking began with the 2016 renewal cycle. This training requirement will need to be completed prior to the license renewal in 2018.
Applicants who apply for a license on or after March 16, 2021 will be required to have completed the required training in identifying victims of human trafficking.
How long are the Speech-Language Pathology licenses issued for? Can I renew my license early? How will I know when I need to renew?
Your initial Speech-Language Pathology license is only good until the next expiration date of your profession (anywhere from 4 months to 1 year). After your first renewal, your license will be valid for 2 years. You will receive renewal information 45-60 days prior to the expiration date of your license and it will state the renewal fee required.
You cannot renew your license early. Our system is not set up to receive renewal information until the renewal time for your profession. We will mail you renewal information approximately 45-60 days before the expiration date of your current license. Remember to notify the Department in writing of any address changes you have. It is your responsibility to renew your license on time. Failure to notify us of an address change does not exempt you from renewing your license on time. You can renew online at www.michigan.gov/elicense Online renewal payments require you to pay with a credit card.

From the President
By Natalie Douglas, Ph.D., CCC-SLP Dear MSHA Membership,
“The willingness to show up changes us. It makes us a little braver each time. Sometimes the bravest and most important thing you can do is just show up.”
Brene’ Brown, Daring Greatly: How the Courage to be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Parent and Lead
Here I am, president of a group of people whom I truly believe practice the noblest of professions. To be honest, at times I seriously doubt my qualifications for this position, and I am not currently undergoing any formal leadership training. But here is what I will do for the MSHA membership to the very best of my ability, I will show up.
Showing up. What does it mean to show up? I believe that we show up all the time for so many different facets of our lives – our families, our friends, our partners, our clients, our patients, our students, our colleagues and more. I am often overwhelmed at all the places where I need to show up, and I certainly can’t offer any easy answers to address the daily life pulls so many of us face. But, there a couple of things I do know. MSHA needs you to show up. MSHA needs you to show up to advocate and help spread the message that communication is a human right for all, that children with special needs are entitled to a fair and equitable education, that adults with neurological disease deserve to participate as fully as possible in life. MSHA needs you to show up to our state-wide meet and greets to chat with your board, and to invite your non-MSHA member colleagues to join us in our mission!
I would also like to explicitly acknowledge our board members, those who are tirelessly showing up for all of us! Thanks to Lisa Register for jumping right into the President-Elect position and helping to facilitate MSHA’s reach to SLPs in the public schools. Thanks to Past-President, Laura Lenkey for working with other states on an ASHA-funded public service announcement to advocate for the professions. Special thanks to Katie Elder for volunteering to serve as secretary, keeping us organized and documented throughout our meetings. Much gratitude to Sherry Riedel who has been showing up for years for MSHA, balancing our budgets and continuing to assure the financial solvency of our organization. We are also thankful to Kelli Pierce who is frequently writing letters and working with our lobbyist to protect our professions in Lansing. Thanks to Greg Spray for working hard to not only gain new members but to engage the membership that we already have. Thanks to both Jacqueline Gale and Terry Lange-Winkel who are working hard to ensure successful MSHA conferences into 2018, 2019, 2020 and beyond! Thanks to Erica Neller for helping to maintain our fantastic website and expand our social media presence. Rosalyn Davis, VP of SLP Healthcare, is leading an extremely productive healthcare committee. They ensure that our speakers for MSHA conferences are exactly who MSHA members need and want to hear from, among many other exciting endeavors. Thanks to Blake Donovan who is updating our MSHA Guidelines for the public schools so that all of our students have access to the best possible evidence-based practices.
Our Advisory Assembly made up of Erica Neller, Sarah Choss, Michelle Bailey, Rosalyn Davis, Alyssa Webster, Callan Gavigan, Karen O’Leary, Kristen Haverberg, Ashley Gutowski, Michelle Baumgartner, Elizabeth Curtis, Beth Westrate are also showing up for us – keeping us abreast of important issues across the state. Thanks to Cary Cekola for serving as our rep to ASHA, representing us at a national level. And we all know that MSHA would not be MSHA without Kim Wesoloski and Dawn Kutney, the glue that holds MSHA together, showing up for MSHA for the past 30 YEARS. I thank all of you for showing up, and I encourage others of you to do the same. Indeed, may we all be a little braver each time!

Exhibitors at MSHA Make a Difference
Jackie Gale, M.A., CCC-SLP Thank you to our many Exhibitors who made our recent MSHA Conference in Troy so fun and successful. With almost 700 conference attendees present, our exhibitors provided many interesting products and information and we so appreciate their support!
Exhibiting at MSHA allows for networking between those who sell products used by SLPs and AUDs, with those who wish to hire someone, or to be hired. Our MSHA Program Book is a great way to advertise if you’re in a private practice, or you’re looking to hire someone, or you wish to advertise your program or continuing education activities. It’s also a great way to support MSHA as the revenue helps defray the expense of the conference.
Join us in Kalamazoo next year where we will continue to see our Exhibitors and Advertisers enrich our conference. Forms are here at MSHA Exhibits or on our website or just contact the MSHA office at 517-332-5691.
Thank you - see you next year in Kalamazoo!
