MSHA is pleased to announce that two Scholarship Awards of $500 each will be given to MSHA Member Graduate Students in 2017 and will be presented at the MSHA Awards Luncheon, Friday, March 24, in Troy.   Many thanks to the Prentke-Romich Company for providing these funds. Ads and Exhibits for 2017

Jackie Gale, M.A., CCC-SLP

Advertising spots in the MSHA Program Book and Reservations for Exhibit Tables are available for the 2017 MSHA Conference in Troy.  All the necessary forms are available online at www.michiganspeechhearing.org  or contact the MSHA Office at msha@att.net

Exhibiting at MSHA allows for networking between those who sell products used by SLPs and AUDs, with those who wish to hire someone, or to be hired. Last year’s MSHA conference attendance was over 700 and all of these people are given the MSHA Program Book.  It’s a great way to advertise if you’re in a private practice, or you’re looking to hire someone, or you wish to advertise your program or continuing education activities.  It’s also a great way to support MSHA as the revenue helps defray the expense of the conference. The Exhibit Hall is also the place where we have all of our Poster Sessions on display and again, viewing four Poster Sessions can earn you .1 CEU.  It’s the place to be at MSHA!

Exhibitors and Advertisers can find all the forms to register on our website or just contact the MSHA office at 517-332-5691.

Thank you - see you in Troy!

Updated FAQs Regarding your SLP License

Here are ANSWERS to some frequently asked questions (FAQs) that LARA has responded to!

Do I have to complete continuing education for renewal or relicensure?
Rule 338.627 adds the requirement of 20 continuous professional development credits (cpd) with at least 1 cpd credit in pain and symptom management in order to renew. Credit will need to be earned beginning with the 2016 renewal cycle.

Rules 338.621 and 338.623 add the requirement of acquiring not less than 20 cpd with at least 1 cpd credit in pain and symptom management within 2 years immediately preceding the date of application for relicensure for a full or limited license. This will be required for a relicensure application submitted on or after 10/1/2019.

Rule 338.629 lays out the acceptable cpd activities, requirements, and limitations.

When do I have to meet the requirements for the completion of training in identifying victims of human trafficking?

Rule 338.604 requires licensees to complete training in identifying victims of human trafficking beginning with the 2016 renewal cycle. This training requirement will need to be completed prior to the license renewal in 2018.

Applicants who apply for a license on or after March 16, 2021 will be required to have completed the required training in identifying victims of human trafficking.

How long are the Speech-Language Pathology licenses issued for? Can I renew my license early? How will I know when I need to renew?

Your initial Speech-Language Pathology license is only good until the next expiration date of your profession (anywhere from 4 months to 1 year). After your first renewal, your license will be valid for 2 years. You will receive renewal information 45-60 days prior to the expiration date of your license and it will state the renewal fee required.

You cannot renew your license early. Our system is not set up to receive renewal information until the renewal time for your profession. We will mail you renewal information approximately 45-60 days before the expiration date of your current license. Remember to notify the Department in writing of any address changes you have. It is your responsibility to renew your license on time. Failure to notify us of an address change does not exempt you from renewing your license on time. You can renew online at www.michigan.gov/elicense Online renewal payments require you to pay with a credit card.

From the President

By Laura E. Lenkey, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

Hello MSHA Members

Happy New Year!  Hard to believe 2017 has already rolled in!  I was excited to reflect back on what a great year 2016 was for MSHA and our members.  I am truly filled with gratitude for the opportunity to serve our professional association.  I am in awe at what strength we have as an association, what powers we exercise to protect our consumers, ourselves and our professions, and the creativity we bring to the forefront to grow and secure our futures!

The opportunity to work with Dawn and Kim, the “bones” of our association, our Executive Board, Advisory Assembly, Members-at-Large, our Lobbyist Noah Smith, and a host of other volunteers who contributed to make 2016 such a success, has been an honor. From launching our first online continuing education course to building our current membership  it’s your support that makes this happen. As an active member you are the backbone of our association helping us to expand our reach and move us forward.

Our highlights this past year include our growth in membership; our well-attended and hosted statewide MSHA Meet and Greets; our successful use of new technology to include a multi-user conferencing platform and our first online CEU!  And our MSHA Annual Conference grew in attendance by almost 20%!

Our MSHA Conference theme this year is so fitting: Facing the Future – Together!  Is there any other way? It is with great pride I consider future opportunities for “teaming” up with colleagues and other professionals to provide outstanding clinical services, increase our investigative efforts and groom new clinicians to carry the torch forward. Our Association offers so many benefits for maintaining and growing our profession. Some of these benefits include personal services for continuing education opportunity, resources for networking, social activities, as well as professional services such as access to our directory, and updates on licensing issues.

Registration for the 2017 Annual Conference is open now!  MSHA is offering an incredible line-up of speakers this year which you can see in the article below.

Our program hosts a number of amazing speakers, vendors and incredible events across the 3 days! Now is an excellent opportunity to renew your benefits, offer to serve your Association, bring your creativity to rocket us forward into 2017 – together!  I look forward to meeting many of you at conference and I hope the opportunity arises to work with you in the very near future!!

Wishing you all the best in the New Year!

Something for Everyone

Terry Lange-Winkel, M.A., CCC-SLP

MSHA members will soon receive in the mail a flyer with all the details for the 2017 MSHA Annual Conference, March 23-25, 2017, at the Detroit Marriott Hotel, in Troy, Michigan.  The flyer will contain the Preliminary Program as well as the Conference Registration Form.  This mailing will look a little different than in past years, so be on the look-out for it in your mailbox.

Emmylou Garza-Prisby, M.A., CCC-SLP and the Professional Development committee have done a great job putting together a wonderful slate of speakers and topics to meet everyone’s needs (see article above or follow link here to entire Program).

Presentations on topics including autism, AAC and core vocabulary, fluency, and anxiety in the classroom are just a few of the topics that may interest school-based professionals. Those clinicians servicing patients in hospitals and clinics may be interested in sessions on aphasia, dementia, laryngectomy, and swallowing disorders. We continue to provide sessions geared toward our undergraduate and graduate students needs as they begin their career and offer sessions to those engaged in helping them through clinical supervision.

One session that will meet all of our needs, especially for the new licensing requirement, is on Thursday evening entitled  Human Trafficking: A Michigan Reality. This class will satisfy the SLP license requirement for a class in Human Trafficking, and we will provide certificates to all those who sign up and attend.  The presenter, Jane White, is the Executive Director and Founder of the Michigan Human Trafficking Task Force. This includes over 135 agencies as members whose purpose is to collaborate in the identification, prosecution, and support for victims of human trafficking. Come and hear Jane speak on this important topic impacting our communities and our workplaces.

Finally, in the last newsletter, Emmylou described the role of the Vice President for Professional Development along with the committee’s responsibilities in planning the conference. We continue to seek volunteers to serve on this committee and learn the ropes of conference planning. Please contact the MSHA office if you are interested.

See you in Troy in March!

The Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation’s annual Silent Auction will be held once again at the MSHA Annual Conference in Troy, Michigan, March 23-25, 2017! This is the Foundation’s major fundraiser for the year. It is a great chance to bid on fun items, a chance to meet Board Members, and find out what the Foundation is planning for the future.    But, we cannot do it without YOU! Your generous donations to the Silent Auction are essential to making the auction a continued success.    Thanks to all of you who donated wonderful items to the MSHA Foundation's Silent Auction this past MSHA Conference in Grand Rapids. Thanks to all of you who bid on and bought those wonderful items!  We raised over $4000, and this will go a long way helping fund our next Student Scholarship Awards to be given out in 2017 and acknowledged at the March Annual Conference in Troy.  Check out our website at www.msha-foundation.org

A Toast to the New Year

Gordon Krainen, Ph.D., CCC-SLP

You did it, you really did!  You got through the holidays!  All that food: turkey, stuffing, ham, pie, corn, cranberries, bread, pie, potatoes and gravy. Did I mention pie?  Oh man, then the family dramas and presents and bills.  I hope you had a good time though. Look at the positive side, the election is over. Oops, sorry I had to remind you of that. Anyway, it’s a new year and we KNOW there will be some interesting times ahead.

In honor of the new year, let’s make some resolutions. Well, of course everyone talks about going on a diet, so we can go there. Then there’s the push to do more exercise - great - we all know that is really important for our health. We can all go out and hug a dietitian and personal trainer. Sounds like a good plan so far.

Next, we need something to look forward to. I know, in less than three short months will be our MSHA Annual Conference!  Now that is something grand to be excited about. In this time of uncertainty, it’s good to know there is a place you can go that is consistently great, exciting, and even good for you. That place this year will be the Troy Marriott Hotel. When you arrive there you will be amazed at how wonderful the presenters are, how great it is to see your old friends and colleagues and such a deal to get reasonable CEUs. You won’t believe it until you experience it for yourselves!  So do yourself a big favor, head north or south, east, or west to get to Troy on March 23rd.  Bring your friends, invite them to join MSHA, and make this a great professional year for you.

MSHA Conference Q & A: From Your Evaluations

Dawn Kutney, B.A., Editor

Last year in Grand Rapids we had over 700 of you attend our MSHA Annual Conference and many of you filled out the evaluation sheets - thank you!  We have read through them all and will answer several of your questions here.   Thank you for your input and suggestions!  It is so very helpful to our Conference Program Committee.

Q: Why can't we have coffee all day?
A:  Because it costs so much.  At over $40/gallon you can imagine how much it would add up.  We do provide it all 3 mornings and after lunch on all 3 days and during the snack break on Friday.

Q:  Why doesn't MSHA have conferences up north?  Traverse City or Mt. Pleasant?
A:   MSHA used to have a conference every so many years in Traverse City.  But the last time we were there we lost money.  Why?  Because driving up north in March is just too risky for many of our members - the majority of whom live in the Detroit metro area and lower part of the state.  We will continue to consider Traverse City if we meet in April.  However, many of you commented that you wanted MSHA to remain in March due to scheduling issues in your work settings.  As for Mt. Pleasant, we also used to meet at Soaring Eagle, but our participants complained about the smoke from the casino which seemed to permeate our meeting rooms.   Maybe we should try again?

Q:  Why can't you schedule 10 minute breaks between classes?
A:  We do try to schedule breaks in between classes where possible.  However, if we did it for each class, we would whittle away part of the day which is now being used to accrue CEUs.  According to our members, obtaining CEUs is the main reason they come to MSHA, and the more the better.  That is also why we offer classes on Thursday evening.  Many of you work during the day on Thursday and then come to the MSHA Conference after work and want to be able to get a class Thursday night.  So that option is for them. Although we welcome anyone even if they've been in classes all day - you can always just say no!

Q:  Why can't we have free parking?
A:  Many hotels will not negotiate this partly because the host city may own the parking site.  And let's face it - this is how cities make money.  However, we will have free parking in Troy in 2017, Kalamazoo in 2018, and in East Lansing in 2019.  And we know you value free parking and free wifi, and we keep this in mind when we negotiate.

Q:  Why can't we have a separate room for Exhibits?
A:  Most times we do - it depends on the hotel.  Our exhibitors want to see people - they want traffic!  We want the exhibit hall to be the hub of things -  it helps our exhibitors and it helps MSHA Registration.
