MSHA Mission Statement: 

The Mission of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association (MSHA) is to provide professional support and development, public awareness, and advocacy for professionals in communication sciences and disorders and the individuals they serve.

 

Action Alert

The Wayne RESA would like to increase the SLP caseload to 75 students, not counting evals and RTI. This will increase the group numbers and decrease the amount of time spent with each child, as well as cost SLPs jobs. Nickola Nelson Receives Frank R. Kleffner Clinical Career Award at ASHA

Congratulations to Nickola Nelson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, Western Michigan University, who is the 2007 Frank R. Kleffner Clinical Career Award recipient from ASHA. She will receive this award at the November 2007 ASHA Convention in Boston. The Kleffner Clinical Career Award is given to those individuals who demonstrate significant contributions to clinical science and practice over a 20-year career. Dr. Nelson was nominated for her lifelong commitment to innovative work in assessing and treating children and adolescents with language disorders extending across listening, speaking, reading, and writing impairments. Her work has lead to linkages between language research, clinical practice, and classroom settings. She is know for her numerous distinguished works, nationally and internally, through original texts, articles, and teaching.

State of Michigan Open House  at ASHA

Look for details regarding the 2008 State of Michigan Open House in Chicago, Illinois, November 20-22, 2008,  at the ASHA Convention.   Info will be here as soon as it is available.

The 2007 State of Michigan Open House at the ASHA Convention in Boston Marriott Hotel, was a tremendous success by all reports. MSHA President Mary Peterson hosted this event and MSHA members celebrated ASHA Award recipients Nicki Nelson, for the Kleffner Award, and Liz Stevens for ASHA Fellow.   Many thanks to all who attended, and a special thanks to our Sponsors and Associate Sponsors who made this happen through their generous donations.  Next year, Chicago!

The Michigan Speech-Language Guidelines: Suggestions for Eligibility, Service Delivery, and Exit Criteria, Revised in 2006 by Maureen Staskowski, is still available through the MSHA Office. We continue to get requests for this document in either the Notebook form (with Dividers & Tabs, approximately 400 pages) or on Disk. The Notebook is available to MSHA members for $30; $40 for non-MSHA members, + $8.00 postage and handling. The Disk is available to MSHA members for $5; $7 for non-MSHA members, $2 postage and handling. MSHA:

Purpose:    The goals of the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association are to:

·   Promote the quality and availability of services to persons with communicative disorders.

·    Foster high standards and competence in persons engaged in the delivery of those services.

·    Promote and support the scientific study of normal and disordered speech, language, and hearing.

·    Stimulate the exchange of information among Association members, and between Association members and professionals in related areas.

·     Disseminate information to the public.
 

Structure:    MSHA is governed by an Executive Council composed of elected Association members.  Much of the work of the Association is performed by members serving on committees, which include:  

·    Audiology – Responds to concerns of audiologists in Michigan on issues such as educational audiology, licensure, legislation, and reimbursement.  Links with the Michigan Audiology Coalition and helps plan the jointly sponsored annual Audiology Conference.

·    Community and Hospital Services – Responds to concerns of speech-language pathologists and audiologists working in primarily medical settings; coordinates the Medical Speech-Language Pathology Forum held at the MSHA Annual Conference; oversees the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Subcommittee; reviews nominations and selects recipients for the MSHA Clinical Service Award. Maintains contacts with reimbursement agencies including Medicaid, Medicare, and Blue Cross. The Augmentative and Alternative Communication Subcommittee of CHS provides a forum for professionals working in this area across all employment settings.

·    Continuing Professional Development – Provides opportunities for updating professional skills and obtaining CEUs through MSHA sponsored programs;

·    Ethics and Standards – Serves as a resource to MSHA membership on questions or concerns relating to professional ethics;

·    Education of the Hearing Impaired – Serves as liaison between Teachers of the Hearing Impaired and MSHA; Provides input and assistance to the Program Committee on conferences and workshops;

·    Legislation – Follows legislative activity affecting members;  Monitors bills and/or proposed rules that impact the profession;  Plans and fosters membership participation in MSHA legislative activities;

·    Programs – Coordinates and implements every aspect of educational programming under the MSHA umbrella.  This includes the Annual Spring Conference, Summer Executive Council Retreat, and other educational programs as identified;

·    Public Schools – Monitors and responds to issues affecting provision of services in public schools;  Encourages excellence in public school programming;

·    Public Relations – Promotes increased awareness of speech-language pathology and audiology professional services via the media; Promotes May as Better Hearing and Speech month to membership and consumers; moderates the MSHA member listserv;

·    Student Affairs – Plans sessions of special interest to student members at the MSHA Conference;  responds to issues and concerns relevant to students in professional programs; coordinates and distributes  the annual MSHA Student Scholarship Awards.

·    Membership – Promotes membership in MSHA; encourages increased communication between MSHA and regional associations and special interest groups.
