Stroke of Genius documentary and live musical performance sponsored by the Aphasia Communication Enhancement Program, Dept. of Speech Path and Audiology, Western Michigan University. The film is Stroke of Genius, a documentary directed by Bahman Soltani. This work is described as an inspiring look at how a writer from California turned his massive stroke into blessings. Telling the story of a man, Dan Mountain, the film recounts the process of his recovery and resumption of his life with his family and his community. Despite the severity of his stroke, Dan awoke to tell about his experience through poetry which his friend, singer songwriter, Marc Black, put to music and recorded.
"This work is an inspiration to those whose lives have been affected by disability in any forms. It illuminates the power of language to heal, the heart, the mind and the body. Stroke of Genius is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love."
A typical performance consists of Marc performing songs from the CD, live. The film will be followed by a question and answer session with the audience. Performances have been presented at Boston University’s Sargent College and UCLA with other at the National Aphasia Association fund raising event in April 2008 and the biennial National Aphasia Conference, Speaking Out, scheduled for June 2008 in New York City.
The National Stroke Association, The National Aphasia Association, and local, community aphasia support groups praise the film and the original music. For more information about the film and the music see the web sites at http://marcblack.com/strokegen.swf
