2010 Distinguished Service Award
John Stevens, J.D.
Matheson, Parr, Jolly, Osmer and Stevens, LLC.
John was honored for his work crafting the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association Foundation. John donated many hours to the association in preparation for the establishment of the foundation and in preparation of the tax exempt status. Not only has he been supportive of MSHA but of other organizations as well. He has assisted the Wayne County Speech-Language-Hearing Association and provided free "legal" counsel to them. He also worked on behalf of MSHA and its members on the denial of tenure issues for SLPs. For this he is truly worthy of the Distinguished Service Award
2010 MSHA Public School Program of the Year Recipient:
Early Childhood Assessment Team, Clinton County RESA
The Public School Committee proudly announces the Early Childhood Assessment Team from the Clinton County RESA as this year's recipient of the Public School Program of the Year Award
This program was initiated four years ago as a means of "revamping" services for the early childhood population and providing a unified tracking system for the early childhood population. The team includes speech-language pathologists, school psychologists, school social workers, occupational therapists, classroom teachers, school supervisors and parents. There is a central location for evaluations allowing full collaboration with team members.
The Speech-Language Pathologists honored for their work on the team are Cathy Gyurich (Team Leader), Debra Mattingly, and Kendra Williams. The program utilizes a workload approach for determining assessment assignments and has designated software for tracking children and their successes. The team is revising the program to include a preschool RTI model. Decision rubrics are applied to determine student needs without immediate referral for special education evaluation. A parent and teacher training component is included, which the general education staff has found to be most helpful in learning and practicing full class intervention strategies. Outcomes data is used to determine if the current service is effective for the child. Speech-language patholoigst in the elementary setting have seen a reduction in the need for "outside" evaluations
2010 Student Scholarship Award:
Elisabeth Fischer McCourt, B.A., Wayne State University
Elisabeth graduated this May from Wayne State University with a M.A. in Speech-Language Pathology. She received her B.A. from there as well. Elisabeth has an outstanding academic record. She has participated in a research project regarding the development of levels of language abstraction in preschoolers with language and speech impairments. She has presented at the ASHA Convention. Elisabeth has special interest in working with children from urban settings. Her future goals include working in a clinical setting which will allow her to continue research.
